We are in single digits, people! The Chicago Marathon is nine days away and our runners are pushing to finish their last long runs and also get us to the Top Fundraising Team spot. The team that beat us last year is close on our heels and we are trailing by just over $7,000. Our hope is that we can rally our support and move TEAM ADPi to first place. Let’s meet a few more runners with incredible stories to motivate us.
Meet Kristen Maycan Favia, Alpha Beta – University of Iowa. Kristen wanted to run her first marathon on TEAM ADPi because, “Alpha Delta Pi is where I learned about Ronald McDonald House and I always loved seeing how much our sorority could make a difference at our local RMH. I knew that I wanted to support a charity if I were to run the Marathon because I like to run for a cause and my positive experiences in ADPi helped me to determine that RMHC was the one to support!” Kristen is currently TEAM ADPi’s Top Fundraiser, with over $2,800 in support for TEAM RMHC and growing. Kristen is especially proud to be running for an organization that supports children and families. “I have triplets that were born at 32 weeks and the last one came home six weeks after I delivered. In order to see my children, I needed to drive 2 hours each day to visit them at the hospital. There was not a Ronald McDonald House near the hospital, so we had to make the long trip each day. I wish that I was able to have a RMH to make those six weeks easier on our family because I saw how important it was to so many families while I was volunteering through ADPi in college. My hope would be to raise enough money to have a Ronald McDonald House near every major hospital in order to keep families close together when they need it the most”. When she finishes the 26.2 miles, her plan is to “find my husband and kids and give them a huge hug! Followed by a shower and a Sweet Mandy B’s cupcake”. To support Kristen, please donate here.
Meet Caroline Brown Smithwick, Epsilon Lambda – University of South Florida. Caroline is the President of the Memphis Alumnae Association and a TEAM ADPi Veteran. Caroline signed up to run in 2013 on our inaugural team but had to back out because she was expecting her second son. She registered in 2014 and completed her first full marathon just 10 months after he was born. “After completing my first marathon last year with TEAM ADPi, it was an easy decision to do it again this year. Plus, it’s a chance to spend some time with my best friend and ADPi teammate, Laura Firlik Andrews”. Caroline has an even better appreciation for the wonderful work that RMHC does now that she has two children of her own. “If our family was ever faced with a medical situation, I know we would always be at ‘home’ with RMHC.” Caroline’s training schedule happens early in the morning before her husband and kids even wake up. “I run 3-4 days a week and try to incorporate some strength training during the week. I’ve found a great group of friends who are willing to run those extra miles with me on the weekend. My husband is my biggest supporter and is always willing to help get the kids up and meals on the table, if I’m not home. The first thing I want to do when I cross the finish line is to hug and kiss my husband and kids. I couldn’t do this race without them.” To support Caroline, please donate here.
Thank you to all our runners, supporters, and followers. We hope you’ve enjoyed getting to meet some of the remarkable women that make up TEAM ADPi. Stay tuned for the remainder of their journey…crossing the finish line in Chicago!
